SWITCH Mobility Launches Electric Reefer Vehicle for Cold Chain Logistics

SWITCH Mobility, the electric vehicle business of Ashok Leyland, has introduced the SWITCH IeV4 Reefer, a purpose-built electric refrigerated vehicle designed for temperature-controlled cold chain logistics. The vehicle has already seen initial adoption by logistics operators across western, northern, and southern regions of India.
The launch is relevant because India’s cold chain sector is expanding across food, pharmaceutical, dairy, frozen, and last-mile distribution applications. For urban and regional logistics operators, electric refrigerated vehicles can support both temperature-controlled delivery and fleet decarbonization goals.
How It Works
The IeV4 Reefer is based on a 300V high-voltage electrical architecture and uses a 32.2 kWh lithium-ion battery with a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The vehicle delivers peak output of 60 kW and 230 Nm of torque, with a top speed of 80 km/h and 22% gradeability.
The refrigerated body supports adjustable temperature regulation from -25°C to +25°C, allowing the vehicle to serve frozen, chilled, fresh food, and pharmaceutical distribution requirements. Its container body uses 100 mm sandwich panel insulation to improve thermal retention during last-mile and regional delivery operations.
A key operational feature is the standby and pre-cooling system. The refrigeration unit can draw power from the electrical grid during vehicle charging, loading, or unloading cycles. This helps preserve battery capacity for road operation while reducing the risk of temperature fluctuation during dock-side handling.
The vehicle has a gross vehicle weight of 3,490 kg and a net payload capacity of 1,200 kg, including the refrigeration unit. It supports CCS2 AC and DC charging, with fast DC charging from 10% to 80% in about 55 minutes. The model also integrates SWITCH iON connected technology for real-time diagnostics, route tracking, and fleet productivity monitoring.

Electric refrigerated vehicles solve two cold chain challenges at the same time: controlled-temperature delivery and lower-emission fleet operation.
