PLUSS Celsure Endura Highlights the Shift Toward Reusable PCM-Based Pharma Cold Chain Packaging
What Happened
PLUSS Advanced Technologies has launched Celsure Endura, a new range of reusable temperature-controlled shipping solutions for healthcare and cold-chain applications.
The product line is designed to transport temperature-sensitive cargo across diverse climatic conditions while improving operational efficiency and sustainability. It targets pharmaceutical, biotechnology, diagnostics, clinical trial and healthcare supply chains where product integrity depends on stable thermal protection.
The range supports multiple temperature profiles, including 2–8°C refrigerated distribution, 15–25°C controlled room temperature and -15°C to -25°C frozen distribution.
PLUSS states that the reusable shippers can provide more than 120 hours of temperature protection and have been validated for 45°C summer exposure as well as extreme winter conditions. The company also positions the platform as a single-protocol solution that can operate across seasons, reducing the need for different packing procedures in summer and winter.
For cold chain users, the news is important because temperature-controlled packaging is moving in two directions at the same time: longer validated performance and lower packaging waste.
How It Works
Celsure Endura is based on PCM, or phase change material, technology.
PCM systems store and release thermal energy as the material changes phase at a defined temperature range. This makes them different from ordinary gel packs or ice packs, which may create overcooling, freezing risk, condensation or inconsistent temperature performance if not conditioned and packed correctly.
A PCM-based shipper is designed to maintain a more stable internal environment around a defined temperature band. In pharma cold chain logistics, that can help protect vaccines, biologics, diagnostics, insulin, clinical trial samples and other temperature-sensitive products.
The Celsure Endura concept is also reusable. Reusable parcel shippers can reduce packaging waste and lower cost per shipment when reverse logistics is properly managed. However, reuse only works when the shipper can be cleaned, inspected, reconditioned, tracked and returned without compromising quality.
The product is intended for passive transport. That means it does not require active power during shipment. Instead, the shipper relies on insulation, PCM conditioning and validated packout design to hold the required temperature for the expected lane duration.
In practical operations, performance will depend on several variables:
payload volume, product starting temperature, PCM conditioning accuracy, packout procedure, ambient exposure, lane duration, courier handling, customs delay, return logistics and post-use inspection.
The claim of more than 120 hours of protection is significant, but users still need to verify the product against their actual routes, products and regulatory requirements.
Why It Matters
Pharmaceutical cold chain packaging is becoming more demanding because healthcare products are becoming more temperature-sensitive.
Biologics, vaccines, clinical trial materials and specialty therapies often have narrow stability windows. A single temperature excursion can lead to quarantine, investigation, shipment rejection, financial loss and potential patient impact.
At the same time, shippers and healthcare companies are under pressure to reduce waste from single-use insulated packaging, foam containers, gel packs, dry ice and mixed-material shipping systems.
Reusable PCM packaging addresses both concerns. It can provide controlled thermal performance while reducing the need for disposable packouts. However, it also introduces new requirements. Reusable packaging must be managed as an operating system, not just a box.
Every cycle needs control. The shipper must be recovered, inspected for damage, cleaned if required, requalified if necessary, reconditioned, repacked and sent back into circulation with a traceable identity.
That makes reusable pharma packaging partly a logistics challenge and partly a quality-system challenge.
The launch also matters because Celsure Endura covers several key pharma temperature bands. A company shipping 2–8°C, 15–25°C and frozen products may be able to standardize part of its packaging workflow if the same product family supports multiple configurations.
Standardization can reduce training complexity, packaging errors and seasonal SOP changes. But it must be supported by route-specific qualification data.
B2B Impact
For pharmaceutical manufacturers, reusable PCM shippers can reduce waste and improve temperature protection, but they should be adopted through formal change control.
Before replacing an existing validated shipper, quality teams should review thermal test data, packaging qualification reports, ISTA profile results, seasonal performance, lane duration assumptions, payload limits and recovery procedures.
A shipper that performs well in a laboratory profile may behave differently under real-world conditions such as airport delays, customs holds, courier misrouting, hot vehicle exposure or weekend dwell time.
For biotech and clinical trial sponsors, the potential benefit is stronger thermal protection for smaller, high-value shipments. Clinical trial materials often move in lower volumes and may require strict chain-of-custody documentation. A reusable shipper should therefore connect with tracking, return management and site-level handling procedures.
For logistics providers, reusable packaging requires a reverse logistics network. A provider must know where the shipper is, whether it has been returned, whether it is available for the next shipment, and whether it has been inspected before reuse. Without that system, reusable packaging can become operationally complicated.
For cold chain packaging suppliers, the launch reinforces the market shift away from simple single-use insulation toward engineered thermal platforms. Suppliers will need to compete on validated performance, ease of conditioning, user-friendly packout, durability, return-cycle economics and sustainability documentation.
For data logger and visibility providers, reusable shippers create another opportunity. Packaging identity, temperature data, shipment ID, return status and maintenance history can be linked together. This allows the shipper itself to become part of the quality record.
For healthcare distributors, standardizing around reusable PCM systems may reduce packout variability and improve thermal compliance. But it also requires staff training. Incorrect PCM conditioning, wrong payload loading, poor lid closure or missed return inspection can undermine the system.
For sustainability teams, reusable packaging should be evaluated through a full life-cycle lens. A reusable shipper is not automatically more sustainable in every lane. The environmental benefit depends on number of reuse cycles, return distance, material durability, cleaning requirements, loss rate and end-of-life recyclability.
The broader industry lesson is that pharma cold chain packaging is becoming more performance-driven and more circular. Celsure Endura reflects that direction: the next generation of temperature-controlled packaging must protect product integrity, support compliance documentation and reduce waste without increasing operational risk.
