What Happened
Americold has announced a new long-term relationship with Jerónimo Martins, Portugal’s leading retail group, to support large-scale frozen product logistics across the Portuguese retail market. The agreement was announced on May 21, 2026, and extends Americold’s European retail cold chain portfolio through a new multi-year frozen logistics operation.
Under the agreement, Americold will manage storage and store case-pick fulfillment for approximately 12 million cases of frozen products per year, serving roughly 300 retail stores across Portugal. Operations will be centralized at Americold’s Lisbon facility, strengthening the site’s role as a strategic temperature-controlled logistics hub for retail distribution.
How It Works
The operating model is built around centralized frozen warehousing, case-level picking, and store-ready fulfillment. For retail cold chain operations, this requires more than pallet storage. It depends on accurate inventory control, disciplined temperature management, consistent picking execution, and reliable outbound distribution to individual stores.
Americold said it has enhanced the Lisbon facility to support the relationship, including refurbishing cold storage chambers and increasing throughput capacity. These upgrades are important because high-volume frozen retail logistics requires stable thermal performance, efficient dock flow, and repeatable fulfillment processes across daily replenishment cycles.
Why It Matters
Frozen retail distribution is becoming more operationally intensive as supermarket chains seek higher service levels, stronger product availability, and more consistent store replenishment. A centralized cold chain model can reduce fragmentation across the network and create better control over frozen product handling, temperature exposure, and fulfillment accuracy.
For retailers, frozen logistics is not only about maintaining low temperatures. It also affects shelf availability, retail execution, labor efficiency, and customer experience. When store networks scale, case-pick accuracy and cold chain discipline become critical to avoiding stockouts, handling delays, and temperature excursion risk.
B2B Impact
For food retailers, the Americold–Jerónimo Martins relationship highlights the value of outsourcing frozen retail logistics to a specialized temperature-controlled operator. A dedicated cold chain partner can combine storage, case picking, facility upgrades, labor scaling, and standardized operating procedures into one service model.
For cold chain technology and equipment suppliers, this type of project creates demand for warehouse management systems, frozen-zone automation, dock temperature control, insulated handling workflows, energy-efficient refrigeration, and real-time inventory visibility.
For B2B cold chain operators, the larger signal is clear: frozen retail logistics is moving from basic storage toward high-throughput, service-led fulfillment. Providers that can deliver temperature integrity, case-level execution, operational reliability, and scalable retail support will be better positioned in European grocery cold chain projects.
